Septic Permits

All new septic systems must be permitted through Environmental Control before construction.
We also keep records of and track maintenance contracts for every aerobic septic system. A maintenance contract is required by law to be kept for all on-site aerobic septic systems. After installation the system will be inspected and an installation certificate will be issued.

Development Permits

Development permits help us to know what is being built and where it is located. With this information, we can determine what flood zone the property is located in and insure that our floodways remain intact. We require that the first habitable floor be one (1) foot above base flood level before construction begins. In some cases an elevation certificate may be required to ensure compliance with the requirements; these can be obtained by contacting a survey company.
All single family homes, duplexes constructed on a vacant lot, and construction of an addition to and existing single family home or duplex if the square footage or value of the existing residential building will increase by more than 50% are required to submit to Environmental Control three inspections during the construction project at the following stages:

  1. The foundation stage, before placement of the concrete.
  2. The framing and mechanical systems stage, before covering with drywall or other interior wall covering.
  3. Completion of construction of the residence.

The development permit and all three passing inspections must be turned in to the Environmental Control Department before permanent electricity will be released to the residence. For more information see HB2833 Fact Sheet.

Health Inspections

We inspect food service establishments, day cares, schools, grocery stores, hospitals, mobile food units, temporary food events and nursing homes to insure compliance with state and local health laws and regulations. These establishments are inspected a minimum of one (1) time per year. All establishments receiving complaints are inspected as soon as possible.

Food Permits

Food permits are required for all establishments that sell or prepare food. They help us to track and organize an inspection plan for all food vendors.

Food Complaints

If you have had a bad experience with a particular establishment please contact us to fill out an official complaint so that we may follow up with that establishment.

Inspection scores are broadcast on Leger’s Restaurant Report Card on KDFM Channel 6.

Environmental Complaints

Contact us to report environmental complaints. These can be but are not limited to: high debris or trash accumulation, high weed violations, and damaged or improperly maintained septic systems.

When a complaint is received it is authenticated; then a violation notice is sent out. After a notice has expired and the nuisance has not been abated, charges are then filed by the inspectors in the proper Justice of the Peace court.
