Joe Stevenson, born November 10,1958 to the late Woodrow Wilson Stevenson, Sr. and Bernadine Thomas Stevenson, is the sixth of nine children, six girls and three boys. He attended public schools in the old South Park District and the Beaumont School district where he was a 1977 Graduate of Hebert High School. During his high school gridiron playing, he acquired the tag, Joe “Quarterback” Stevenson.

After receiving numerous high school honors, Joe received a four-year football scholarship from North Texas State University. When his eligibility ended, he continued his schooling by serving as a graduate assistance on the football coaching staff under Coach Bob Tyler. However, Coach Tyler resigned, and Joe’s dream of continuing his education at North Texas State was shattered.

In 1982 Joe moved back to Beaumont and with the help of Coach Ozen, he was hired as a Correctional Officer. He is the first elected official to serve under both former Sheriff Culbertson (1983-89), and the former Sheriff, now County Judge, Carl Griffith, Jr. (1989-93).

In the community, as a Dare Officer, he taught the drug program in the schools from 1991-93. He organized the “Let’s Save the Children Community Choir” which has performed in various area churches and for organizations. Constable Stevenson is in the Mentor Program as a Big Brother and Special Friend at Blanchette, Price and Martin Luther King Schools. Recently, as a member of the NAAP, he wrote and performed a song for the NAACP Member-ship Drive and directed a choir for the NAACP-MLK Celebration in January of this year. One of his main concerns is ensuring safe school zones for the children.

Since his election as Constable of Precinct 6 in 1996; he has been working diligently to fulfill his promise of office productivity to its highest level. Among his many awards and affiliations are the following: the Martin Luther King, Jr. Support Group; The Hebert High School Alumni Association; The Golden Triangle Mass Choir; Odom Academy Campus Educational Improvement Committee; Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.; Public Speaking at Choir Youth Groups and Public School Gatherings; The Alex Durley Football Camp (As a Camp speaker); The Law Enforcement Committee of the Mayor’s Coalition for Drug Free Beaumont; Plaque of Dedication and Appreciation (1993 Texas D.A.R.E. Officer Association Conference); “The World of difference Award” (Sponsored by KBMT Channel 12-1993); “The Good Steward Award” (Sponsored by Shiloh Baptist Church, Rev. Amos Landry, Pastor-1994); Plaque of Dedication and Appreciation (Youth Musical at East Mount Olive Baptist Church-1994); 1997 Martin Luther King, Jr. Drum Major’s for Freedom Award.
